Professor Sally Poppitt
Human Nutrition Unit Director
Professor Sally Poppitt is the founding director of the Human Nutrition Unit and recently appointed Fonterra Chair in Human Nutrition at the University of Auckland. Her research has been focused on the prevention and treatment of conditions arising from poor nutrition including overweight and obesity, metabolic dysregulation, and diabetic and cardiovascular risk. She has a particular interest in the mechanisms which underpin appetite regulation and the control of food intake. Within her role at the University she leads the dairy Primary Growth Partnership (PGP) human nutrition platform, part of the $72M joint NZ government/industry funded 7 year program of innovation for dairy science. Sally also holds a joint appointment at the New Zealand Centre of Research Excellence (CORE) for Food and Nutrition within the Riddet Institute.
Prior to her position at the University of Auckland she worked in the metabolic facility of the University of Cambridge MRC Dunn Clinical Nutrition Centre, UK and at the UK Medical Research Centre's clinical nutrition facility in The Gambia, West Africa. She has extensive experience in conducting nutrition intervention trials in both developed and developing countries. She has published widely in peer-reviewed scientific journals, been an invited speaker at international nutrition conferences and acted as a consultant to government advisory panels and the pharmaceutical industry.
